Security for Coding Agents

Watcher is an AI-agent security and runtime monitoring platform from Apollo Research that monitors coding-agent sessions, evaluates agent actions in real time, blocks dangerous operations, enforces organization-wide policies, and provides an audit and analysis layer for engineering teams. It currently integrates directly with Claude Code and Codex.

What is Watcher?

Watcher is designed as a security layer between autonomous coding agents and the development environments they operate in. It records coding-agent sessions and trajectories, uses LLM-based graders to assess activity, and can intervene before potentially dangerous actions execute.

Its Watcher Live capability provides real-time oversight. It can automatically allow routine actions while blocking or escalating risky operations such as destructive infrastructure commands, secret exposure, public repository pushes, or other policy violations.

Watcher Analyze provides historical observability and forensics across agent sessions. Security and engineering teams can inspect agent activity, identify recurring failure patterns, review incidents, and use the resulting information to improve organizational policies and monitoring rules.

Watcher is designed for organizations running coding agents at scale. Security teams can define hard organizational policies while developers retain more granular control over their individual agent environments. Policies can cover command restrictions, required monitors, locked agent instructions, MCP allowlists, and default skills.

The platform can be used through Apollo's hosted cloud or self-hosted inside an organization's own infrastructure. The self-hosted deployment includes the monitoring API and Analyzer, while developer machines run the Watcher client and send agent sessions to the organization's deployment.
